 The St. Anne's Church has an eventful history. The St. Anna parish  was originally part of St Cross Parish within the city walls of 1297 , she was safe and was independent in 1668. The first church was demolished  during the Calvinist regime in 1581.

Between 1607 and 1621, a new Gothic church was built with the old materials in the shape of a church hall.

 

Of these, only the slender tower is in the original form, because  the church underwent a Baroque metamorphosis. In 1657 the wooden arch it was replaced by a  brick vout and their own baroque form. At that time the church received an extraordinary baroque decoration.

Before the Council of Trent had the homily of the priest at a place ambo or a lectern at the altar or at the door of the choir. Because the Catholic Reformation emphasized the Faith, a pulpit was placed between the people, which for the sermon the preacher addressed.

The pulpit consists  a staircase, a support block, a tub and a sounding board. A baroque pulpit was in very different ways with beliefs symbols decorated. Parsons made ​​frequent use of such imagery, so that the faithful not only enjoyed the word but also of the eye.

 

The support block of the pulpit is formed by three intertwined angels,putti , a masterpiece of  Flemish Baroque woodcarving.

 

Symbolism: The dove in the soundboard, which is unusually wide extending  above the pulpit, is the symbol H. Spirit, the dove under the soundboard, which is surround sends powerful rays of the divine mercy .

RESTAURATIE PREEKSTOEL ST-ANNA TE BRUGGE

Een nieuwe duif  voor het klankbord  van de preekstoel.

De Sint-Annakerk heeft een bewogen geschiedenis. De Sint-Annaparochie was oorspronkelijk een deel van de Sint-Kruisparochie dat binnen de veilige stadsomwalling van 1297 lag en zelfstandig werd in 1668. De eerste laatgotische driebeukige kerk werd tijdens het Calvinistisch bewind in 1581 afgebroken.

 Tussen 1607 en 1621 werd met de oude materialen en nieuwe gotische kerk gebouwd in de vorm van een zaalkerk. 

Daarvan is slechts de ranke toren in de oorspronkelijke vorm bewaard, want reeds vlug onderging de kerk een barokke gedaanteverandering. In 1657 werd het houten gewelf vervangen door een gemetste vout in de eigen barokvorm en kregen de vensters een gedrukte boog. In die tijd kreeg de kerk een uitzonderlijke barokke aankleding. 

Wie met het gevoel van een eenvoudige dorpskerk binnenkomt, staat verbaasd over de barokke weelde van het interieur, waardoor de Sint-Annakerk van de Bruggelingen de titel van ‘salonkerk’ kreeg. 

Die fierheid steunt ook op het feit dat de parochianen van die toen arme stadswijk zelf hun nieuwe kerk en haar meubilair hebben bekostigd. 

Uit de overvloed stellen wij enkele merkwaardigheden voor, en laten de andere over aan uw belangstelling tijdens uw bezoek. De koperen centrale kroonluchter is nog de originele.

Centraal in het muurbeschot van de rechterkant staat de barokke preekstoel (1670) gebeeldhouwd door Maarten Moenaert.

Vóór het Concilie van Trente had de homilie van de priester plaats bij een ambo of een lezenaar bij het altaar of aan de deur van de koorafsluiting. Omdat de Katholieke Hervorming de nadruk legde op het geloofsonderricht, werd een preekstoel geplaatst tussen het volk, dat zich voor de preek naar de predikant richtte.

De preekstoel bestaat uit een trap, een steunblok, een kuip en een klankbord. Een barokke preekstoel werd op zeer verschillende wijze met allerlei geloofssymbolen versierd. Predikanten maakten van die beeldentaal veelvuldig gebruik, zodat de gelovigen niet alleen genoten van het woord maar ook van het oog.

De steunblok van de preekstoel wordt gevormd door drie in elkaar gestrengelde engeltjes, een meesterstuk van kennis en uitwerking.

Symboliek : De duif in  het klankbord, dat zich ongemeen breed uit boven de kuip uitstrekt, symboleert  de H. Geest,  de duif onder het klankbord, die rondom zijn krachtige stralen de goddelijke genade uitzendt.

Dit is de nieuwe duif  voor het klankbord van de preekstoel. ANNO 2012

Ze zal ook nog verguld worden.

Ornamental woodcarver Patrick Damiaens

In the 17th century, the Belgian town of Liege became highly prosperous through its coal mining, metal processing and glass refining industries.

Over the years, it evolved into a fashionable residence for princes, aristocracy and wealthymerchants who could spend lavishly on expensive furniture.

As most skilled craftsmen from the surrounding regions were invited to work there, the city soon became famous for furniture characterized by beautifully and delicately carved decoration.

Three hundred years later, Liege-style furniture is still being created and carved to the highest levels of quality.

From his workshop in Maaseik, Belgium, Patrick Damiaens is a reassuring reminder that even in these days of mass-manufactured furniture, there is still a demand for the traditional skills of a master artisan. 

Damiaens studied three years at the Don Bosco Institute in Liege, where he learned the complex trade of ornamental woodcarving. He spent six years studying furniture- making and one year woodcarving in his hometown of Maaseik. Today, Damiaens is the only full-time ornamental woodcarver inFlanders, the Dutch-speaking half of Belgium.

Patrick works in close cooperation with four colleagues: a staircase-maker, two cabinet-makers and a furniture restorer. 

Between them, they turn planks of rough French oak into stunning cupboards, chests of drawers, wardrobes, doors, frames, staircases, stereo cabinets and decorative panels.

We can make and decorate virtually any item of furniture,” Damiaens exclaims enthusiastically.

To make an item of Liege-style furniture is ahighly complex process. The preparatory technical drawings can take a full month and everyitem of furniture requires a totally new set of drawings.

 His first task is to make a rough sketch of the pattern, which might be based on an original item of furniture or created by Damiaens himself.

 This is then presented to the customer. The final technical drawing is redrawn on tracing paper and pinned to the selected panel of wood. 

The design is then transferred onto the wood, which inmost cases is French oak.

The next stage is the only time that Damiaens uses a machine (apart from one to sharpen his tools). He skillfully manipulates a router to remove the bulk of the wood surrounding the design, after which the actual hand carving can begin. 

With respect, patience and much artistic craft, Damiaens carves each motif until he finds the right expression and character. 

Once the carving is completed, the panel is returned to the cabinetmaker to be treated and incorporated into the intended piece of furniture, be it an 18th century reproduction piece or an individual creation.

Damiaens is enthralled with the variety of projects he is asked to undertake, as well as the larger pieces of furniture which easily take eight months to a year to complete. 

For a German client, he is currently building and decorating a Georgian-style library. In between these large projects, he carves and decorates a range of smaller, custom-made

commissions.

Damiaens likes to challenge himself with exciting new carving designs. Most recently, he is utilizing the style of 17th century English woodcarvers, who created wonderful trophies and exquisite cascades of flowers, fruit and leaves, which are applied to paneling, walls and even chimneys.

 So detailed and refined are these carvings that in certain light they look natural and lifelike, and have been likened to lacework.

“I still try to add a personal contemporary touch to these high-relief carvings,” explains Damiaens. “I see them as my children.”

In der Werkstatt von Patrick Damiaens entstehen in Handarbeit filigrane Ornamente und feine Verzierungen in und aus Holz.

Von alter Kunst inspiriert 

 Patrick Damiaens aus Maaseik in Belgien betreibt ein ganz spezielles Kunsthandwerk: Er ist Ornamentschnitzer und fertigt Reproduktionen und eigene Kreationen aus Holz.

 Seine Arbeiten beeindrucken durch ihre reichhaltigen Verzierungen und die Präzision, mit der sie entstanden sind.

 Der Lütticher Stil  hat es ihm dabei besonders angetan. Schon als Kind besuchte er mit seinen Eltern gerne Museen und interessierte sich für Kunst und Kultur.

 Und solange sich Patrick Damiaens erinnern kann, war er immer besonders beeindruckt von den Holz­schnitzereien im Lütticher Stil. Dieses kunstgeschichtliche Erbe wollte er bewahren. Bei seiner Arbeit bemüht er sich, dem alten Stil gerecht zu werden und seine „Lütticher Möbel“ so authentisch wie möglich zu machen. 

Manchmal kopiert er dabei ein bereits bestehendes Möbel­stück, manchmal entwirft er etwas ganz Eigenes im Lütticher Stil.

Ein ganz besonderes Unikat

 Die Inspiration für seine Arbeiten holt sich Patrick Damiaens in Museen, Kirchen und alten Herrenhäusern. Er besitzt eine umfang­reiche Bildersammlung von verschiedensten Schnitzarbeiten und historischen Holzschnitten aus der ganzen Welt. 

Auch seine umfangreiche Bibliothek bietet Hilfe bei der schwierigen Motiv-auswahl. Denn jede seiner Arbeiten ist einzigartig und wird kein zweites Mal auf die gleiche Weise hergestellt.
