LUIKSE MEUBELEN

In de XIVde eeuw wordt Luik de hoofdstad van een

onafhankelijk prinsbisdom. Geklemd tussen vijandige buren ( Frankrijk en Spaans Nederland )probeert het zijn onafhankelijkheid te bewaren en voert handel met alle partijen.

Vanaf het eind van de XVIde eeuw begint Luik een echt welvarende stad te worden. De voornaamste activiteiten van de streek zijn steenkool, wapens, metaalnijverheid en glas.

Als  in de XVIIde eeuw eindelijk de vrede getekend wordt, begint voor Luik de gouden eeuw. De prinsen , de machtige aristocratie en een rijke bourgoisie trekken veel ambachtslui naar de stad. Zo ontstaat een zeer rijk versierd meubilair van zeer hoge kwaliteit uit vooral eikenhout.

Patrick Damiaens bestudeerd Luiks meubilair in het Museé d'Ansembourg te Luik.

De periode van 1735 tot 1790 wordt ook wel de

" Luikse Régence-stijl " genoemd naar analogie met

de franse Régence-stijl. Toch omvat deze Luikse periode een aantal stijlen gaande van de late Lodewijk de XIVde stijl tot het Rocaille en vroege

neo - classicistische stijl.

Deze stijlen volgden elkaar zonder onderbreking op en soms treft men op eenzelfde meubelstuk verschillende stijlen aan. zelfs op het hoogtepunt van het Rocaille en de Duitse barok blijft het Luikse meubilair trouw aan een zekere symmetrie en gematigdheid, zo eigen aan de Régence.

Het meubilair uit Luik is van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit, uitbundig maar verfijnd versierd en solide van structuur.

Het bereikt zijn hoogtepunt in de XVIIIde eeuw.

The museum is a historical house on the famous Vrijthof square with something for both tourists and the residents of Maastricht. The museum presents the history of those who lived in the city of Maastricht in the form of art works and in beautifully designed everyday objects from furniture to horsemen's guns, from silver candelabras to watches. The interior of the room makes way a few times each year for exhibitions. 
However, the focus always lies on the five centuries of the entire city of Maastricht’s cultural identity. It is a history we display to be discovered, explained and experienced. That is the reason the Museum aan het Vrijthof, which up until recently was also known as the Museum of the Spanish Government, exists. Drink in the spirit of Maastricht. Feel the history. Admire arts and crafts from the past. Lose yourself in the sensation of becoming part of life in the 18th century. You will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge, to see where the connections lie, and to simply enjoy so many of the beautiful things produced by Maastricht’s artists and craftsmen in the past.

 Liège was the centre of a wealthy bishopric situated between Flanders and Germany. Although part of the holy Roman Empire, its furniture is not typical of the German style. Some of the forms and the decoration came from France, but the result is too refined  to be classed as French provicial.

The industries of Liège had been stimulated by the wars of Louis XIV, and the Walloon (Now French speaking part of Belgium) population included many brilliant craftsmen.

The houses built by the 1730s include the Château de Seraing for the Prince-Bishop, and the Hôtel d'Ansembourg for the banker Michel Willems.

The craft guilds flourished, but very little furniture is actually signed. The principal wood was oak, carefully chosen for its fine quality, close grain, and consistent,delicate sheen. Some pieces were partly gilded and

painted, but bronze and ormolu were not used.

The most typical pieces are the great oak cupboards and buffets in one or two parts, tall clocks, commodes with four equal drawers and short feet, writing-tables, bureaux, and glazed cabinets and bookshelves.

The delicate carving, always carried out in solid wood, resembles that on French wall panelling. Furniture outlines were simple, and the effect, unlike yhat of Dutch or German furniture, was never bulky or ungainly.
Chairs were either in the French style and caned, or in the Germanic-Dutch tradition with back splats and loose seats.
These were often of walnut, ash or elm. For simple furniture , pine and beech were also used.
